| Ivy believes in human rights, and that under our great Constitution all individuals have the right to equal representation and protection under the law, regardless of age, race, religion, national origin, sex, sexual orientation, or disability. The only group of individuals that are trained to protect those rights against a potentially tyrannical government and the powerful special interests are, like it or not, attorneys.
During his career, Dan Ivy, has represented some of the most controversial clients from the extreme right to the extreme left and everything that falls between. If an attorney fails to represent an individual because of their unpoplar beliefs or is fearful of their peer's opinions, then they have also taken away a little of the rights that our forefathers fought so valiantly to ensure and protect.
There was a Lutheran minister who was liberated from a Nazi concentration camp after the Second World War that stated it so well when he said, "First they came for the Jews, and I wasn't a Jew; then they came for the trade unionists and I wasn't a trade unionist. Then they came for the Catholics and I wasn't a Catholic. And then they came for me, and no one left to stand up for me!"
If you deny anyone justice under the law then you have also denied yourself the right to equal justice. I have always represented those powerless and unpopular clients that other attorneys wouldn't represent them. I believe that an attorney has a duty not to back down from public opinion or the powers that be because he does a disservice to both his client and his profession.
A tough attorney cannot be a "cure all" for all the injustices in the world, but he can uphold the principles of our democracy one case at a time. I am not afraid to be criticized for representing the powerless or unpopular, because I am carrying out his responsiblities as the guardian of those rights that our U.S. Constitution has guaranteed to all of us.
"At what point is the approach of danger to be expected? I answer, if it ever reaches us, it must spring up among us, it cannot come from abroad. If destruction be our lot, we must ourselves be its author and finisher. As a nation of free men, we must live through all times or die of suicide." Abraham Lincoln.
"The world is governed by very different personages from what is imagined by those who are not behind the scenes." Benjamin Disraeli, Prime Minister of Great Britain.
